There are two armor sets that are worth mentioning, Armor of the Undying and Taro's Armor.
Armor of the Undying is the best mele fighting armor. But you do not get hands on this armor till you have reached second region, Ishikari Plain. Untill you get this armor, Taro's Armor will be a good choice. It is a good defensive armor and provides good spirit recovery. In the early game it makes sense to have this armor because you will not have learned a lot of skills and obtained charms to boot your damage. Till then, you are better off with a very good defensive armor. Taro appears after you liberate Saito camps. He will give you this armor.
Armor of the Undying
This armor is the best mele armor in the game. There is a catch to using this armor. If you read the armor abilities, it mentions a term "weapon match". What does this mean?
Every time you encounter a weapon trainer, he asks you to tell what weapon should be used against certain weapon used by the opponent. This is what weapon matching is all about. If you match the weapons correctly during the mele fight, you get the bonus offered by the armor. Following is a quick cheat sheet for weapon matching.
